Taste of Italy at home with friends

We used a get together as an excuse to traverse italian wines with some of our favorite foods at home.  We started with a 1997 Felsina Chianti Classico paired with classic antipasto of smoked ham and vegetables (we saved the cheese for dessert).  It was delicious as always.  The 1997s are jsut about perfect now across all three names, Beradenga, Rancia and Fontollaro.

We then moved to porcini filled tortolloni in truffle butter with pamesan paired with a 1997 Soldera Brunello Riserva, which did not show as well as usual, but still very nice.

We served two wines with the main course (grilled frenched lamb in mustard and herbs) and cheeses for the comparison.  We opened the Piedmonts 6 hours ahead of time and they really changed over the hours.  The Barbaresco is very nice after a few hours and stays/improve over time, but the Barolo is a different animal as time goes on and I would give it 6 to 8 hours.

The Barbaresco is a 1970 Produttori Moccagotta Riserva, which we have had often (Chambers street wines in manhattan) and is always magnificent.  I highly recommend it.

The Bartolo Mascarello 1971 Barolo was as good as anything I have had.  Previously I had thought their 64 was tops, but this was magnificent.

i continued to be amazed that a 40 year old wine drinks best after 8 hours.
