Jean Tardy - Echezeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes
Early funk blew away and odd, thin flavors changed with time into something richly pleasing. This is Ech so the emphasis was not elegance but a deep, plummy satisfaction.
Drinking beautifully, and a fine counterpoint to the Hall cabernets. Rich still but not overwhelming. This is elegant and just delicious.
Kathryn Hall - Cabernet Sauvignon
Much of a muchness with other Hall cabernets, be they Kathryn or single vineyards or the Napa -- ultra ripe, sweet, and fat. There doesn't seem to be much vintage or vineyard difference.
Martelet de Cherisey - Puligny-Montrachet Hameau de Blagny 1er Cru
Out of the gate this was lovely, with great breed and balance. As the hour wore on, it tightened rather than relaxed and ended up being somewhat short aromatically and in the mouth. To be fair, I think this should have been a first course wine but Tris, Bea, the Shappys and I just sipped as we cooked in Paso on our 4th of July getaway.
Roche de Bellene - Volnay Santenots 1er Cru
A bottle from the Nicolas Potel library of finds from unnamed cellars. This is just fantastic. Great clarity in the glass, on the nose, in the mouth. Starbright, with floral aromatics and great persistence of flavor. This is why I drink Burgundy. With Tris, the Shappys and Bea in Paso.
