2004
Columbia Crest - Merlot Grand Estates
Still a strong currant aroma on the nose, very refined tannins, and a hint of vanilla in the finish. A well balanced Merlot, even after 6 years in the bottle, still has a year left.
2003
Sebastiani - Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley
Strong aroma of dark cherry (currant), still fruit on the nose, even after 7 years in the bottle. Tannis have softened, but didn't need 7 years of aging. Nice finish. A good cabernet, too bad Sebastiani has gone downhill a little bit the last few years.
2007
Concha y Toro - Merlot Casillero del Diablo
Very interesting Chilean Merlot. Medium bodied, very strong fruit aromas on the nose - dark cherry, currant. Mild tannins, very drinkable for being so young. Definitely wouldn't hold, not a complex wine that will get better with age.
Paired very nicely with steak and chocolate. Great value for only $10.
2007
Delas Freres - Cotes du Rhone St Esprit
Slightly past its prime, so not much fruit on the nose, minus a hint of dark cherry. Stronger coffee aromas.
Still a very drinkable red, light bodied, smooth tannins, a light sour note (similar to a Barbera d'Alba).
Probably best paired with food at this point.
2005
Sala - Cervaro Della Sala
A very interesting wine. Hints of apple on the nose even after 5 years on the bottle. Very smooth, not overly dry. A blend of Chardonnay and a sparkling grape, creates an interesting mouth feel and helps tone down the bite in the Chardonnay. Would drink a little earlier to get some more fruit aromas.
