1997
Rousseau, Armand Pere & Fils - Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques 1er Cru
With little variation, the bottles from this case have been very consistent. This bottle had a pretty nose of ripe fruits, sous bois, and sauvage, with a touch of prune and tar thrown in. still quite tannic in the mouth but balanced by the still ample fruit and acidity. Not as complex as the best, but such an enjoyable wine.
2002
Dujac - Morey St-Denis
Popped and poured, drank over the following 5 hours. Dark ruby. Really notice the inclusion of stems on the nose. Spicy red fruit and earthy, with lots of tannins. Boy this is still young, after 4-5 hours of air tannins are still very prominent. Doesn't have the acidic cut of the best burgundies, but that may just be that the tannins are so noticeable they still dominate everything at this point. I would wait 5+ years to open another, or give it PLENTY of air. Despite the hefty tannic structure, you can tell it has the stuffing underneath to last. Very very solid villages.
1999
Groffier, Robert Pere et Fils - Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru
Very noticeable oak and wood spice on the nose. Would have guessed west coast pinot. still, it was quite a good wine - the nose had very pretty dark fruits in addition to the wood, and it had a long finish with a good balance between the tannins and acidity. Not my cup of tea, but certainly a good performance for the style.
1996
Roumier, Georges - Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru
Popped and poured due to circumstances, which was a mistake. Initially reticent, acidic nose. over time, pretty red fruits and that sauvage character that you can only find in burgundy emerge, but it was sadly towards the end of the bottle after 3-4 hours. good depth and concentration. I'm not sure it ever completely outgrows its structure, though my opinion may be too colored by the incorrect decanting treatment.
1982
Gaja - Barbaresco
Slow od for 3 hours and then decanted for an hour. Dark ruby with the barest hint of lightening at the rim. Beautiful nose of dark fruits, menthol, tar and earth. In the mouth still firmly tannic, buffeted by strong acidity. Long, long finish. Long life ahead. I think more complexity will come as it ages; it tastes more like an 89 than an 82. Great wine.
