Zenato - Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Well balanced classic Amarone. All the flavors one would anticipate, but a justâ?¦ aâ?¦ weeâ?¦ bit... lighter than hoped for. Decanted 90 minutes before serving - tasted nicely at the pour, full bouquet of dark fruits. A fair trade for the mid level price point.
Tor - Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard
This vintage of the famed Tor - Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard continues to show itself as both a delicious, smooth, velvety cab with cherry, blackberry and current flavors. It's not a cab powerhouse, but it isa nearly perfectly delicious wine. Served with light appitisers before switching to a classic Amarone w/ a homemade Bolognese. The switch off went smoothly. The Tor became richer and fuller as the evening progressed. Opened 30 min before drinking, was best at 90 minutes; then all gone. Only 3 bottles remain - I won't spend $145 to replace with so many stunning 2012 cabs at under $80 - but I also have no regrets on the original price of $120 - was the right move at the time. Drink now - or over the next few years - unsure of the life span...
Venge Family Reserve - Cabernet Sauvignon
Parker: A finished barrel sample of the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve exhibits a dense ruby/plum/purple color in addition to sweet cassis, vanillin and spice notes. This will be a forward, precocious, sexy Family Reserve given the vintage conditions. The structure, massive foundation and power of the great years is not there, but that has been replaced by pure charm, lots of ripe fruit and a sensuous style. Most consumers probably prefer this style to a big blockbuster, and this 2011 should be hugely successful when released.
Venge - Syrah Stagecoach Vineyard Block I-4
Parker: The dense ruby/purple-hued 2012 Syrah Stagecoach Vineyard Block 1-4 reveals plenty of earthy, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit aromas. The lovely aromatics do not follow through on the palate impression, which is medium-bodied, soft, and falls off slightly in the mouth. This wine is very good, just not compelling. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
Venge - Merlot (Oakville Estate Vineyard)
Parker: A spectacular offering, the 2012 Merlot Estate Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1987. Three-hundred fifty-one cases were produced of this full-bodied, dense purple-colored beauty that offers up notes of espresso roast, blackberries, black cherries and hints of mocha, chocolate and oak. With stunning purity and richness, it can be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.
