2005
Rochemorin - Blanc
Consistent with previous notes....pears and apples on the nose, with a floral, citrusy palate with nice weight and concentration. Good stuff.
1995
Rauzan-Segla
Youthful color--dark purple with little sign of age. Pretty perfumed nose of flowers, red licorice and a touch of vanilla. Fully resolved tannins on the palate, which is dominated by dark fruit and a little earth. Elegant and feminine...very nice but not profound.
1998
Dominique Laurent - Nuits St Georges
Impressive dark reddish color in the decanter; slightly translucent in the glass. Pretty dark fruit on the nose--berries and earth with a hint of licorice. Definitely looser and more accesssible than the Vougeot from last night, with brighter, redder cherrry fruit. Medium weight and a nice moutfeel. This held up well on the second night.
1999
Rene Engel - Clos de Vougeot
Initially very savory, with scents of mushrooms. It opened up with some time in the decanter to reveal dark fruit flavors, as well as coffee and chocolate. Full bodied and mouthcoating, over the course of the night this went through a slightly austere phase, then softened again. Berries chocolate and spice on the finish. Very nice.
2005
Louis Latour - Corton-Charlemagne
Wow. Absolutely gorgeous nose--butterscotch and caramel, with an overarching sense of sweetness that I've never encountered in a dry white wine. On the palate the win is incredibly round and rich, with floral and citrus flavors. The acidity must be there--there is nothing cloying about it--but it is wrapped in such richness that it is barely discernable. Caramel returns on teh finish to leave you yearning of another sip. Easily the best white wine I have ever had, and overall WOTY candidate.
