Kosta Browne - Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
Color is tending toward brick red; nose is has some high tone red fruit as well as sandalwood and slight, very pleasant earth; palette has similar notes with sweetness added to the fruit on the front, middle adds cola and a mid-range finish with bourbon-barrel oak. Excellent if not completely full of stuffing.
Popped decanted and drank over 3 hours. Garnet-purple color. Nose of green pepper dominant, with tar, graphite and pencil shavings, and black currant. Tannins still just a little angular, the green pepper/cedar notes evident on the pallette, followed by the undernotes and lastly the fruit. Tightly wound, still needs time to loosen and show its best, and rating may improve with it.
Beringer - Merlot Bancroft Ranch (Private Reserve)
Suffered from the excesses of early 2000s winemaking, over-oaked, imbalanced fruit bomb.
Albert Morot - Beaune Les Cent Vignes 1er Cru
Crimson in color. Floral, slight cherry and and mushroom on the nose. Strawberry and slight, pleasant mushroom/forest floor, earth on the pallette. Short finish bumps it down, otherwise lovely.
Garrigue - Vacqueyras La Cantarelle
Rustic, brambly, extracted. Needed food to bring it around. Had it together with the 2008, which was fresher and higher acid.
