A somewhat sharp nose reveals noticeably aged aromas and the sharpness continues onto the crisp flavors that seem out of balance. I'm not sure if the problem is limited to this bottle but it's hard to imagine that this is intended effect.

The NV Brut Blanc de Blanc Initiale sparkles on the palate with soft, creamy textured fruit framed by silky tannins and notes of salinity on the finish. The wine reveals an expansive, mysterious personality with a level of depth to the fruit that renders the mousse extremely delicate. This is great Chardonnay first, and a profound Champagne second, but made in a slightly richer style than the Originale. Whereas the Initiale is made from the steeper parcels, the Initiale is made from plots on the lower slopes of vineyards in Avize, Cramant and Oger, where a component of clay is more prominent. This year the wine is a blend of equal parts 2003, 2002 and 2001. 2003 is a small harvest of rich, concentrated juice, which contributes to this wine's weight. This bottle was disgorged January 18, 2008.

The same wine as Tradition with a new name. As refreshing as an Arctic sea breeze. Oaky and potent, with pear, apple, and oriental spice aromas.

Still very yeasty, along with malt and spice aromas and flavors. Firm and vivid, picking up more toast and coffee notes as the texture gets creamier. On the dry side and vinous in style. Distinctive. 2,750 cases made.

Made from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards and barrel fermented, from the first taste this is not a typical Blanc de blancs. With a beautiful intense gold color and ultra fine bubbles this is truly a hand-crafted Champagne in the best sense. Brioche, caramel and green apple on the nose and the palate has finesse yet combines with a subtle power and strength that only Anselme Selosse can obtain. This particular cuvee is a blend of the 1999, 2000, and 2001 vintages though it is still extremely youthful and will age gracefully for the next 15-20 years.

Worthy of a New Year's Eve dinner. This wine is very Cristal-ish, with fine bubbles and a lovely brioche and yeast noise. Balanced and delicious as an aperitif, but big enough to work as a great food wine, too. This artisanal champagne maker is a superstar in the making. Don't miss trying a Jacques Selosse champagne if you are lucky enough to find a bottle or two of his small production wine.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
