Rose Champagne Blend
Producer Notes

Krug Champagnes are famous for their rich, nutty, elegant and extremely food-friendly nature. Founded in 1843 by German immigrant Johann-Joseph Krug, the house has since been run by many generations of the Krug family, and the general style of the champagne has evolved along with that progression. Depending on the blend, a combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier is used, and... More »

Medium rose hue. A restrained and highly complex nose, that is not especially fruity, displays a moderate yeast character along with slightly exotic aromas of mandarin orange and Asian tea, all wrapped in an enveloping array of beguiling rose petal scents. There is very good richness with a relatively soft supporting mousse that adds to the impression of richness to the superbly complex and highly textured flavors, indeed one could aptly describe this as more wine that Champagne. As such this is indeed a sumptuous Krug rose and as such, while this could be drunk now with much pleasure or held for further development; it is going to be extremely difficult to stay away from! In short this is stunningly good and should only serve to add to the mystique of this cuvee. I should note that while I am not always wowed by the Krug Rose this latest incarnation is strikingly good.

(LD311030): Bright orange-pink. An explosively perfumed bouquet evokes red berries, Asian spices and flowers, along with toasty lees, anise and vanilla. Deep, sappy and palate-staining, with intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, velvety texture and a jolt of chalky minerals on the back half. The mineral quality lingers on a long, incisive finish of striking purity.

Mid salmon. Definitely darker than it used to be. Very light rhubarb nose. You have to struggle to get that aroma! Very nice tight bead - superior texture without a doubt but low-key flavour. Tightly packed. Very fresh. Long. A wine that demands attention, if only so that you can pick up the flavour! Pretty marked acid.

Krug Rose is a relatively new product from the Krug brothers. Their aim was to make a wine with a proper house-style, where the color was the only clue that it was a rose. The color is an extremely light salmon-pink, and the nose is definitely Krug! Their unmistakable symphony of full, complex aromas is backed up by a whiff of raspberry. The taste is tremendously austere and acidic, but less generous than a Grande Cuvee and definitely a wine to store.

Very expressive and beautifully balanced, this is all in the details, from the palate-caressing texture to the vibrant acidity, finely meshed with flavors of black raspberry, plum, wild strawberry, candied citrus peel, honey and ground spice, accented by rich hints of espresso, treacle and pastis.

Remarkably refined and elegant, this champagne rose is an extraordinary example of how roses should be made. A delicate and refined nose of discreet red fruits, hints of white flowers, nuts and delicate spice. Beautifully structured acidity combined with moderate "creaminess" makes it enjoyable glass after glass. Still good to hold on to as it is still has some tightness and seems to be hiding something. Incredible mousse and very delicate beads.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
