2010 Calera - Chardonnay Mt Harlan Chardonnay - USA - California - San Benito - Mount Harlan - White

USA - California - San Benito - Mount Harlan

White Chardonnay
Producer Notes

The hunt for limestone took California Pinot Noir trailblazer Josh Jensen to one of the highest and coldest vineyard sites in the state, to a place where limestone lived; several million tons, in fact. Time spent in Burgundy, including a harvest at DRC, had instilled in Jensen an appreciation for the influence of terroir in great wine. In... More »

Vivid yellow-gold. Musky aromas of pear skin, fresh pineapple and lees are lifted by a spicy nuance. Dry, juicy and expansive, with intense flavors of citrus and orchard fruits, anise and iodine. Shows a suave blend of richness and vivacity and finishes smoky, spicy and long. There's something vaguely Meursault-like going on here.

Drink Dates 2012-2018

The 2010 Chardonnay Mt. Harlan shows the pedigree these hillside sites planted in 1984 and 1998 are capable of. This is a beautifully balanced, harmonious wine that captures the exuberant side of Chardonnay in its expressive tropical fruit, buttery notes and spices, while never losing its essential minerality, focus and drive. The 2010 shows fabulous freshness all the way through to the finish. I loved it. This is yet another great showing from Calera. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.

I have had several bottles of this wine and it has grown on me with every bottle. This wine benefits from serving at just the right temp...not too cold (little fruit) or too warm (overdone) but really like it as it evolves in the glass. For the price it is a good buy.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
