One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. The vineyards date to the early 18th century, and are planted on extremely gravelly, well-draining soil, typical of the best vineyards in Bordeaux. A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
