Issue Issue 156

Vivid ruby. Expansive, perfumed bouquet of candied red berries, rose oil, cinnamon and five-spice powder. Deep on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors and a late note of candied flowers. The finish repeats the spicy quality and lingers with very good clarity and sappiness. This is pretty seductive right now.

The 2009 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is richer, deeper and fleshier than the Falstaff. Exotic spices, tangerine, crushed flowers and red berries are some of the notes that wrap around the finish in this juicy, expansive Pinot. The finish reveals gorgeous depth and plenty of harmony. Kutch used 50% whole clusters and aged the wine 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.

A savory style that gets progressively muddled and full-bodied, with herb, cedar, dried berry and black licorice flavors that end up very dry and stemmy. Not up to the usual standards. Best from 2012 through 2020. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Complex noise, complex mid palate, great mineral finish. The best Pinot I had for the past 4 years

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
