Issue Issue 162

(36% each grenache and syrah with 9% each cinsault and tempranillo, 8% petite sirah and 1% each cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot; 15.2% alcohol): Good bright, dark red. Aromas of crushed blackberry, black cherry, smoky minerals, pepper and spices. Chocolatey in the mouth but tightly wound, even a bit youthfully tough, finishing a bit hard-edged today. Give this another year in bottle before pulling the cork.

Rich, intense and extracted, this is a gutsy, tannic powerhouse that is nonetheless pleasing, packed with boysenberry character. The kind of wine that demands food, ending with a push of pure ripe dark berry fruit. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

Nice fruit as Behrens wines always have. This wine was a little strong on the oak right now though. It is a little young so if it comes together with a few years it should be very nice. Much more Grenach character than previous vintages which have been dominated by the Syrah.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
