Producer Notes

Sourced from the 60-year-old vines off Bret Lopez's JJ Cohn Vineyard in Rutherford, and made by Celia Welch, this wine became a legend in just three short years. The vines were planted in 1945 by JJ Cohn (Lopez's Grandfather) in response to neighbor and Inglenook Manager John Daniel's post-war behest to plant vines to service the coming demand. Good bright ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry, violet, mint and anise. Lush, seamless and voluptuous, in the style of the year. Very pure dark fruit and mineral flavors are given added sex appeal by bitter chocolate and espresso nuances. Finishes very long and suave, with supple tannins and outstanding early appeal. Will this close down in the bottle?

Drink Dates 2014-2024

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with huge dark fruit, scorched earth, menthol, licorice and smoke. The first impression is quite positive, but then the persistence on the mid-palate unexpectedly drops off quickly, as if there is a hole in the middle of the wine. In this vintage, the difference between the second label M. Etain and Scarecrow is much less evident than in 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

A riveting expression of complex Cabernet, this is rich, loamy and layered, with pure, detailed currant, blackberry and black licorice flavors and firm, gripping tannins. Gains and sustains on the finish. Cellar-worthy.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
