Quiet, deliberate brilliance is a good way to describe Fred Scherrer and his wines. While winemaker for ten years at Dehlinger, he learned that the success in winemaking revolves around the vineyard. He began making wine from grapes grown on his father's property in Alexander Valley in 1991 and opened Scherrer in 1997. Candied cherry and watermelon rind nose. Medium body, with bitter notes lending much of the structure. Somewhat medicinal character, but not off putting. Could be brighter, and tasted much better after being open for a day.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
