2008 Bonneau du Martray - Corton-Charlemagne Chardonnay - France - Burgundy - Cote de Beaune - Corton - White - Grand Cru

France - Burgundy - Cote de Beaune - Corton

White Chardonnay - Grand Cru
Producer Notes

With vineyards donated by Emperor Charlemagne himself on the most desirable stretch of the Corton hill, Domain Bonneau Du Martray remains the largest single holding of the Charlemagne climate. It is the one and only domaine in Burgundy to produce exclusively Grand Cru wines and one of the finest white wine producers in the Cote D'Or. The estate's ownership has only changed hands three times... More »

There is a hint of exoticism to the citrus, pear and white peach suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of sulfur. The rich and extremely fresh middle weight plus flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as ample mineral influence on the austere and ultra-pure finish that seems to go on and on. This powerful and impeccably well balanced but presently closed effort should live for many years though it will probably come to its peak 10 to 12 years from now. In a word, fabulous.

Very pale yellow-green color. Nose dominated by lime, crushed stone and steely minerality. Densely packed and almost painfully dry, with taut, penetrating citrus and mineral flavors showing more energy than flesh today. This ungiving grand cru has plenty of depth and flavor intensity but is an infant today. The stony, austere finish is like touching a live wire. This seems every bit as steely as the estate's 2007 at the same stage but denser; in fact, this may be even more closed. Bottled April 2010. Solid. This has pulled up the drawbridge all right. Firm and dry and closed down. Quite painful acidity. Very dry finish. Marked acidity. Just tart mass for the moment. But the acidity and mass suggest that it may eventually open out into something pretty interesting and certainly lively. But all suggests this should be left alone for many years.

The 2008 Corton-Charlemagne comes across as super-classic in its chiseled fruit. Today the 2008 is holding back much of its potential, but there is plenty of energy and vitality in its focused, wiry frame. Lemon peel, lime and flowers are some of the notes that linger on the finish. Ideally the 2008 needs another year or two in bottle (and perhaps more) to show the full breadth of its personality.

Offering a nice mix of citrus and mineral, with a hint of oak, this is subtle and nuanced, with white peach, lemon and floral flavors. A luminous white. 3,000 cases made.

A first class corton charlemagne. Crisp and clean with good fruit and mineral.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
