Another astounding deal from Italy, this well-made Aglianico is deep red in color, with aromas of cherry, clove, Chinese Five-spice, and a hint of something that I can only describe as "beef stew" - perhaps a meatiness combined with sage and thyme. Although quite austere by itself, with rustic Italian fare the wine sings with cherry and spice. With enough tannic structure to indicate that it will cellar for a few more years, at $12 a bottle, it's worth trying out and perhaps stocking up for pizza night.
