Producer Notes

Bodega Catena Zapata is located in the renowned Mendoza wine region of Argentina. Paul Hobbs helped put this winery on the map years ago, and its reputaion has done nothing but continue to rise over the last decade. This Malbec has great color, very nice dark purple. I get aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, earth and pepper subtle leather and oak with a hint of licorice. Flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, leather, oak and bitter chocolate on the palate. It's also a little chalky. Remember when you would go outside after class to clean the blackboard erasers by banging them together. That chalk dust went everywhere. That's in this wine, which is fun. A little too much oak on the finish, but it's not overbearing. Firm dry tannins, zingy acidity on a long finish. Decanted for 4 hours.

Acidic and tannic, Strong bite on the back of the tongue, but light up front. Taste of plums, oak, and black cherries. Dark Ruby Red in color. Good for heavier foods. Needs to age, good storage wine.

Deep ink color in the glass. The nose had hints of dark berries and a fragrance of flowers. The palate was juicy and spicy with a nice blend of fruit, oak, alcohol, and tannin. The body was medium and balanced. Overall, a modest Malbec for 2008.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
