Producer Notes

Just south of Livorno, Tuscany, lies the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, and the Tenuta San Guido estate, where Sassicia is produced. The estate was originally owned by Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, and has been managed since WWII by his son, Niccolo. A true pioneer in the Italian wine industry, his experimenting with the introduction of non-native varieties to Italy, resulted in the world-famous... More »

Drink Dates 2011-2015

Two years ago Jim Knight, our French buyer, and I had the pleasure of visiting Tenuta San Guido and tasting through their portfolio. Yes, tasting multiple vintages of Sassicaia is everything you would imagine but the wine that blew us away was their little gem named Le Difese. Only in production for a few vintages it was the must have wine of the trip and we taste over 400 wines that week. It has taken us almost two years to get the Le Difese into California but we finally have succeeded. With that said, we do not have much available and it is a fantastic well priced gift for those that know wine. We hope you are as stunned by this remarkable Super Tuscan as we were." -- Lance Montalto Italian Wine Buyer "Nearly opaque red-black, with a violet hue. Stellar Bordeaux-like aromas of graphite, tobacco, cassis, black cherries, and a hint of violets emanate from this Super Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The palate is exceptionally well integrated, with a juicy, silken mouthfeel, and fine acidity. Remarkable elegance, with mellow red and black fruit flavors coming through on the long, oak-and-violet inflected finish. Exceedingly well balanced, this should pick up weight with time. A "baby Sassicaia," without question, and a wine to purchase by the case...Drink now-2015." - (SWJ)

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
