Issue Issue 150

($52) Deep red. Expansive bouquet of red and dark berry liqueur, Asian spices, dried violet and minerals. Lush, seductively sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors stain the palate, picking up peppery spice and smoky mineral qualities with aeration. The gripping finish strongly echoes the cherry note and clings tenaciously. Shows surprising vivacity and clarity for its power; this is really promising.

This is a beauty. Shimmering ruby-violet luster, essentially transparent, the color stays deep at the rim, indicating this still has many years of life ahead of it. Medium bodied and showing ripe red cherry-like Pinot flavors that are ever-so-slightly succulent, but without any heat or warmth on the back end . . . . . love it. The tannins are snuggly fitted under the cashmere blanket of fruit. The Pinot clones/selections all sing in unison, with no one fruit flavor/savory character/mineral tone shouting above the rest of the chorus. The fruit tastes pristine. This is a great example of cool-climate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
