2008 Serene - Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir - USA - Oregon - Willamette Valley - Red

USA - Oregon - Willamette Valley

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

Owners Ken and Grace Evenstad arrived in Oregon in 1989 to pursue their passion for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their winemaker Tony Rynders, who holds a Masters in Enology from UC Davis, crafts impeccably balanced wines primarily from three low-yielding estate properties: Jerusalem Hill, Evenstad and Winery Hill. Syrah is produced under their Rock Block label.

a tiny bit young; sharp cherries, very crisp acid and a decent amount of minerals

Deep Ruby. Sappy, medium plus intensity nose with ripe cherry and gentle wood spice. On the palate it is dry, medium bodied, with medium to medium plus acidity, round integrated tannin, and a touch of alcohol burn. Flavour attack is cherry and pomegranate, which softens to oak spice at mid-palate, with a medium finish length of smokey wood. This wine is a bit over-powered, such that the initial varietal Pinot aromas are a bit lost on the palate, which brings to mind California Pinot more than Oregon or Burgundy, which is a bit against expectations, and for me, does not justify the price point.

Puts me in mind of a ripe-vintage, top-flight Morey-St-Denis. Dark fruits, minerality, some iron.

Drink Dates 2013-2020

Drinking very nicely, made in an extracted style but not obnoxiously so, lots of nice spices, strawberry, cranberry flavors, with that distinct, obvious pinot noir flavor. Vibrant acidity, great pairing for thanksgiving-type foods (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce), extremely smooth, very balanced wine that's hitting its stride from a great vintage. Looking forward to bottle #2...2-3 years from now.

Very tannic wine but with potential to develop over the next ten years.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
