Good full ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of gravel and chocolate. Sweet on entry, then more subdued in the middle, with a medicinal reserve to the flavors of redcurrant, plum and graphite minerality. I find this less sweet and giving today than the Bond Matriarch but more precise. This firmly tannic second wine needs four or five years of cellaring and may ultimately merit a higher score.

The 2008 The Maiden is a beautiful wine graced with exquisite finesse in its dark red berries, flowers and licorice. Gorgeous inner perfume and a super-refined personality are some of the qualities found in the 2008 Maiden. A weightless, subtle finish rounds things out nicely. Stylistically the 2008 Maiden is quite a bit more delicate -at times even fleeting -next to the 2008 Harlan Estate.

Loamy earth notes and mouthcoating tannins provide the baseline for this rich, layered effort, which is full-bodied, with toned-down dried currant, mocha, spice, cedar and sage notes.

A well made and well delineated wine. For the price one can probably do better but this is quite good, just not exceptional.

Clear, deep ruby core with reddening on the rim. Clean developing bouquet of red and blue fruits, chocolate and wood spice. Dry, medium bodied, well integrated flavors with an airy finesse and very quick finish. A maiden indeed.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
