Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. This has completely closed down. No way to score it at this point. Aeration was no help. Won't open another one for at least 2-3 years.

Let me re phrase it did not go with the chicken breast and green beans. I will say this though tasted alot more drinkable than 2 years ago so i can imagine ine another 5 to 10 years it will be delicious. Wife hit it on the nose strong almost harsh brandy characteristics so hopefully the aging will mellow this CDP out.

This wine represented the on-going battle between those who say the 2007 CDP was over-the-top versus those who say it was superb in its ripeness. We can see both sides. The nose was like a bomb going off in the kitchen -- strong scents of black cherry, herbs, pepper, and some alcohol. The body was staggeringly rich -- all kinds of dark fruit (cherries, plums, etc.) just barely overriding the slight burn of the alcohol. Some felt it was way too strong to eat with food (one going so far as to say it was like a brandy). The finish just went on and on. We had this with grilled steak and roasted cauliflower. We probably should have decanted (and waited another 2 years!), but it was great to see what all this talking is about. One group gave it a score in the low 80's while others felt it merited a mod-90's score. Will hold off scoring for now.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
