Not sure how WS rated this wine with 96 points. It is no doubt a good wine but it does not merit a score that high. It is a very good super Tuscan with opaque dark fruit, good balance, and mild tannin. The blend is noticeable but not seamlessly integrated. Lacking complexity and more just big fruit. Good wine overall

Finally got into one of these - this will definitely benefit from air but on the one hand I get the high rating, on the other hand I think it was a little too high. Certainly the sour cherry, rhubarb and dusty flavors that clearly situate this in tuscany and this is big, meaty and rich. Requires food, rich red sauce italian food with meat. This is heading in a great direction and really smooth. I wasn't blown away but I think this is going to be better in a few years (and with a longer decant).

Wow! What a great wine for the price. Red and black fruits, cigar smoke, and good acidity, made this a great wine with pasta and red sauce.

Opaque, deep purple core with some reddening on the rim. Clean, intense aromas of blue and black fruit, campfire, loamy soil and cedar. Dry, Full-bodied, with ample acid and chewy tannins on a lengthy finish. Cassis, smoke, and cloves on the palate. A huge brooding wine with all of the right ingredients bumping around together a bit clumsily now, but with a bit of time perhaps in a wonderful synergy. Still a great value and perhaps a new favorite IGT. It spent 10 days in post fermentation maceration and 12 months in new and 2nd passage American and french oak according to production notes. 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot

Plum and coffee on the nose. Very full bodied with smooth tannins on the finish. This is a very good wine especially considering the price. Tasted twice.

Ruffino In Modus the Sangiovese presents its solid structure and typical cherry and red berry aromas; the Merlot contributes with its characteristic smoothness, enriched by delicate notes of mint and small black berry fruits; the Cabernet Sauvignon seals the union between these 3 royal varieties with its austerity, with its sweet, herbaceous perfumes and its elegance. Complex, yet simple at the same time, modern in style, yet with a distinct Tuscan character, Modus is a child of the union of Ruffino's century-long winemaking experience and the company's desire to renew itself by experimenting with new varietal expressions and new viticultural technologies. This has always been a Ruffino trademark. Modus is an exercise in style, in experience, in the will to improve. Wine Spectator This red is phenomenal on the nose, with blueberry, light toasty oak, coffee and sweet tobacco. The palate is full and utterly captivating, with its combination of fruit and very subtle, silky tannins. Goes on and on. Best after 2014. 7,000 cases imported. Score: 96. 'James Suckling, October 2010.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
