Producer Notes

In 1996 Melville Vineyards made the bold move from Knights Valley to the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where Ron Melville and his sons set up the estate property with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Rita microclimate, with its coastal winds and fog, provided the Melville's the perfect locale for their 139 planted acres of Pinot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Winemaker Greg... I thought that this was a very nice pinot, not a 94 like Parker stated. It does bring some heat, but it goes well with the acidity on the back end. On the nose you get heat, cherry, strawberry, some faint baking spices and vegetal/basil notes. On the palate it is very red fruit front palate orientated with a tannic/heat soaked mid/back palate. Very creamy and well structured, decent finish with slight heat and acid. All in all I think that right now this is a 90 point wine but give it 1-2 years and I think that this will be a 92+ wine.

Dark ruby in color, beautiful Pinot. Sweet cherries/red berries, with a bit of vanilla/light oak. No Burgundian-style Pinot here, this is unashamedly Central Coast.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
