Producer Notes

With its deep historical roots in Sonoma, Hanzell is a California wine pioneer. Its story begins in 1948, when Ambassador James D. Wow, great and big Burgundian type made Chardonnay's so rich, lively and still tannins (smooth and fine grain) kick in in after taste that makes me believe it will improve over next 8-16 months and shall last 2-3 years after that.

Clear, light golden in hue. Clean aromas of chalky, white mineral and citrus blossom. Dry, dense palate of green apple, white citrus and hints of salty minerals with a touch of buttery oak. Medium bodied with racy acidity and moderate alcohol. Long finish with a tart yet satisfying overall mouth feel. A good reflection of the wine's terroir with little interventional maneuvers in the wine making according to the winemaker. Only 33% of the racked juice saw new oak. The flavors are rather bold here and I could use a bit more integration but overall a very enjoyable chardonnay.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
