Big Basin is sited on a 19th century vineyard plot that Bradley Brown discovered when he was surveying the property. He turned up redwood stakes arranged in a grid and found a grapevine growing into a tree. A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
