Issue Issue 150

($60) Good deep red. Spicy red fruit aromas are complicated by mocha, earth and a whiff of caramel. Sweet dark berry, game and licorice flavors are framed by ripe acidity. The tannins turn a tad dry on the end. I'd be tempted to drink this wine within the next few years for fear that the alcohol will come to dominate the fruit.

The 2007 Syrah is somewhat monolithic and underwhelming. While it reveals good color and plenty of blackberry fruit, it just isn't singing at present.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
