2007 Melville - Pinot Noir Estate Pinot Noir - USA - California - Santa Barbara - Santa Rita Hills - Red

USA - California - Santa Barbara - Santa Rita Hills

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

In 1996 Melville Vineyards made the bold move from Knights Valley to the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where Ron Melville and his sons set up the estate property with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Rita microclimate, with its coastal winds and fog, provided the Melvilles the perfect locale for their 139 planted acres of Pinot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Winemaker Greg... More »

RP 94 Even better is the explosive 2007 Pinot Noir Estate, which possesses abundant amounts of boysenberry, black raspberry, forest floor, roasted herb, and subtle smoke characteristics. Rich, textured, pure, and profound, this deep Pinot has the acidity and tannin necessary to age easily for 5-8 years. Melville's six Pinot Noir cuvees are all noteworthy. With the exception of the Verna's Vineyard wines, which come from Los Alamos, the other five are all made from different parcels of the same vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills, with various density of plantings as well as clonal choices.

Not great. Full bodied, nice strong aromas, but the flavor profile seemed off balance and hot. Murky and odd profile - could pass for another varietal.

Color: Dark core with red edges, a bit hazy from the unfiltered process the wine goes through. Nose: Super ripe cherry and strawberry, bright red fruit tones, oak and sweet fruit nose. Palate: Largesse, a bit hot, the fruit is big and expansive, texture is a little thick and palate fatiguing. Silky tannins and minimal acidity noticeable at this stage. Not my style anymore for Pinot Noir at this age. Maybe a few years would settle it down.

Disapointment. Was expecting a great QPR given the Parker rating and price but this was too hot: just fermented way too long for my taste... a little much alcohol...

Nice balance. Starts off a little hot, but a little air time helps out a lot. Bright cherry flavors with a medium finish.

I thought that this was a very nice pinot, not a 94 like Parker stated. It does bring some heat, but it goes well with the acidity on the back end. On the nose you get heat, cherry, strawberry, some faint baking spices and vegetal/basil notes. On the palate it is very red fruit front palate orientated with a tannic/heat soaked mid/back palate. Very creamy and well structured, decent finish with slight heat and acid. All in all I think that right now this is a 90 point wine but give it 1-2 years and I think that this will be a 92+ wine.

Dark ruby in color, beautiful Pinot. Sweet cherries/red berries, with a bit of vanilla/light oak. No Burgundian-style Pinot here, this is unashamedly Central Coast.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
