Red Cabernet Sauvignon
Producer Notes

Born and raised in Napa, trained in winemaking at Sterling and Caymus, Frank Altamura has serious credentials. In 1985 he and his wife Karen began their own quest to make exceptional, collectable wine, turning an old cattle ranch in Wooden Valley into vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Probably the best Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted from Altamura, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is aged 30 months in 70% new oak from the same high-elevation vineyard as the Sangiovese. Notes of espresso roast, graphite, black currants, sweet black cherries and earthy, loamy terroir are all present in this dense purple, full-bodied, exuberant, concentrated and expressive Cabernet Sauvignon.

A profound effort, offering wonderful purity of flavor, with tiers of anise and black licorice, generous yet structured and elegant. This shows both power and finesse, ending with a wonderful burst of dark berry fruit.

Some black licorice on the nose, very soft and plush, no overt tannins but plenty of flavor still. Tasted at 2007 Napa cab retrospective and this was my favorite of the night

Excellent, ESP for a Cali cab. Not overly rich, fairly restrained.

The 2007 Altamura presented a deep crimson color in the crystal glass. The nose was elegant and complex with tones of dark fruit, spice, oak and a hint of leather. A gentle swirl produced legs that hung ever so gently to the sides of the glass for minutes. The palate was soft, almost velvet-like. The rich, round and balanced flavors filled the mouth. The fruit had a light sweetness that complimented the tannins. Absolutely delicious after dinner. Drank like a $100 bottle of Cabernet.

This wine is aging nicely. Similar notes as last time except this bottle was consumed in the same day. I let the bottle sit open for about 3 hours and it was outstanding.

A well made wine. Nose of blackberries and blueberries. Full bodied and very well balanced with moderate acidity and silky tannins. Great finish. Needs to be decanted for two hours.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
