USA - California - Sonoma - Sonoma Coast

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem... More »

A light wine in weight. Still had that strawberry flavor on the palate. Not much on the finish but still a nice wine.

Very fruity and subtle, with a touch of earth. Nice wine but not very complex, but still good.

Elegant all around. Upper register cherry aromatics, a silky texture, convincing finish. Very nice.

I am a big WS fan, but this one was just "OK". Tasted like any other mid priced Pinot. Will try again in a few years.

Light garnet in color, this wine has an elegant nose of raspberries, cherries, and crushed herb aromas. In the mouth it is equally as elegant, even distinguished, with gorgeously textured flavors of raspberry, red apple skin, hints of citrus oil, and a woody undertone that provides a base note to the brighter flavors. Perfectly balanced, this is a beautiful rendition of Pinot Noir that gives ample time to reflect as much in its long finish.

Ultra-pale in color, a friend actually asked if I was drinking a rose. The nose was tight and never opened up even after an hour of decanting. The wine was very light in the mouth and while showing decent fruit, there was truly nothing to get excited about here.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
