Producer Notes

The "two hands" are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz-based wines from prized regions within Australia. In 2000 they started with just 17 tons of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the beginning the wines were very well received at home and abroad, with a healthy stream of... Blockbuster wine. Inky and opaque ruby/purple stain. Cocked and loaded aromatics of blackberry, black plum, earthy spice and licorice root. The palate is complicated, layered and chock-full of black fruit highlighted with bing and red cherry, red currant and baker's chocolate and hints of clove. This is bursting with flavor and concentration, but has a beautiful acidity that saves it from being plodding. Needs a good 1-2 years age before it really comes into its own and will continue for at least a decade.

Intense, concentrated wine. Subdued nose at this point. Powerful, blue & black fruit mouthfeel with lots of black pepper and spice. Still young with a good amount of tannin; I look forward to drinking this again in a few years.

Great wine. I love the Two Hands Garden series, and this one does not disappoint. I love the clarity and focus of the flavors and the incredibly seamless integration of the tannins. A lot of fruit -- tart blueberry and cherry -- balanced with some cedar and just the right amount of tannin. It feels like everything is in the right place, in the right amount. This would be a good candidate for a desert island wine for me.

Even in a weak vintage, this one stands out.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
