Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

Not bad, but had an odd copper penny note on the nose. Didn't really like it.

The lightest of 3 wines served this evening but this was like a powerful burgundian style Pinot Noir with really intense, fresh fruit - bing cherries, strawberries and minerality. Not as complex or full bodied as the previous two wines but as good a California Pinot Noir as you'll find.

Medium garnet in the glass, this wine has a rich nose of black raspberry and cola aromas. In the mouth it is equally rich, with deep raspberry bramble flavors and that cola quality sneaking through with a caramelized edge. Despite being rich, the wine thankfully hangs back from being overdone, and simply ends up in the lush category.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
