Producer Notes

Felsina, for all of its current, well-deserved respect and fame, is the product of an ancient and humanitarian history. In the 12th century this estate was a roadside hospital directed by Benedictine monks who tended to the pilgrims and merchants traveling the Strata de Rancia.

The winery is located within the most south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico zone near Siena. In 1961,... More »

Classic and just as great as it always is. Color: Dark red to vibrant red edges Nose: Wild cherry, blackberry, some earth, leather, and spice. Palate: Perfect acidity and structured tannins, the flavors are red to slightly tart but in that classic Chianti way. A long and clean finish.

Served it with Chicken Cacciatore. Really didn't care for it too much. It seemed that there was not enough fruit to balance out the tannins. Somewhat of a disappointment.

Tasted from half bottle. Perhaps it was disappointing after opening a corked half of the riserva 1995, but this hadn't yet developed much complexity and seemed as if it would be oxidized prior to getting there. Ruby/brick. Tart cherry, minty/spicy and a hint of oak. Dry and steely in the mouth with a drying, but finely grained finish.

Garnet color with very closed nose at first, Initially quite tart on the palate with competing black cherry and bitter spice notes. After a bit of opening, the flavors married together a bit more to produce a fruity finish with only a hint of dusty tannins. Simple chianti, simple pleasure.

We drank this with Steak Puttanesca (friends over for dinner) on 12/26/09. It decanted for over an hour and then went back in the bottle for a couple more hours. It was typical Chianti with a very pleasant bouquet of black cherry, plum, burnt toast and spice aromas. The palate was very smooth and balanced with flavors that followed the nose.

Tasty, a good chianti for drinking with pizza or solo. Simple but had the classic dark spice and modest taste of dark fruits.

A nice wine with blackberry and lavender notes. Medium body wine with a nice citrus and black cherry finish.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
