Producer Notes

Scientific methodology prevails at quirky Australian winery Mollydooker, a 1995 creation of husband and wife Sparky and Sarah Marquis. Famed for their consistently high-scoring "Velvet Glove" Shiraz, the Marquis team strives to produce the "velvet glove" palate sensation, a blanket of flavor that covers the palate before the structure is revealed, in all their blends. Pretty full-bodied, lots of spice and fun with BBQ.

This is a pretty straight forward, uncomplicated wine with quite a bit of power and intensity. In a way, this wine reminded me of the Slovenia blueberry brandy that Charlene has brought back. The blueberry flavor is pretty prominent and just comes in waves. However, surprisingly this wine does not seem empty, which is unlike many of the fruit forward wines that come from Australia. Very clean and a little different type of flavor profile than the Shiraz / Syrah that I am used to, more elegance to it, and in a way reminded me more like a Grenache (the Torbreck Barossa Valley Les Amis 2005 comes to mind, but this wine is not as intense and powerful, but then is ¼ the price). Jay Miller of Wine Advocate says 96 points, Harvey Steiman of Wine Spectator says 92 points and Josh Raynolds of the International Wine Cellar says 87 points. The grapes for this wine come from three incredible vineyards: Scott and Cheryl Longbottom's in Padthaway, Darren and Belinda Joppich's in Langhorne Creek, and the incredible Gateway vineyard in McLaren Vale. This wine needs some food.

Candied plums and black currant aromas and flavors. Super plush mouth feel. Velvety texture. Long finish.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
