USA - California - Sonoma - Russian River Valley

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from... More »

2 hours to open up in a decanter. Powerful red, spicy fruit nose. long sweet, smooth, peppery finish. a little hot due to alcohol.

Liked better than the Sonoma Coast. Great mouthfeel and fruit more ripe.

Bought this at a restaurant sale somewhat recently (a year ago). I have had issues with all the corks from wines I bought there so far - this is the 3rd different bottle I've opened. Somewhat baked and really unremarkable wine. It was just starting to brick around the edge... Had some bright red fruit and vanilla cola still apparent, it was not what was expected (incorrect storing at the restaurant?) either in quantity or quality. Overall muted on the nose and palate - I did run it through a cheese cloth with my cork blowing up. We'll see on the next go round.

Tasted blind with 4 other 2006 Pinots: ROAR Garys', Black Kite Kite's Rest, Sinskey Carneros, Fort Ross FRV over leg of lamb, veggie tagine and spoonbread dinner. Consensus was KB and Black Kite, Roar, then Sinskey and Fort Ross fairly distant. I preferred the KB. I found it to be the most delicate/feminine of all, bright-berry-fruit driven, slight baking spices, oak in balance. Some said it was too hot, but I didn't pick up on that.

Good but certainly not great. Nice full fruit flavor and healthy finish. Day #2 did not seem to improve so not sure what kind of legs this wine will have in cellar

NR alcohol Aromas: ripe, rich and meaty with notes of licorice and cherry Palate: supple and smooth with cherry, herb and earth Impression: plenty to like here for a medium priced pinot noir - I tasted this wine before bottling and it is showing nicely

The ?06 Vintage seems to have produced a more provocative rendition of Pinot than I'm accustomed to from Michael & Dan, perhaps some of their experience is paying dividends? Complex and flirty in its earthy array of vivid white pepper, tea leaves, salty sea breeze, black cherry pie and pure raspberry scents in the nose. Dapper and generous in the mouth, with big juicy flavors that are underpinned by a pleasant, stemmy complexity (a la Brewer Clifton, did they use stems this vintage?). Much more primal than any Russian River I've tasted from KB, but still full of its trademark exuberance

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
