($263) Inky purple. Intensely perfumed nose displays a seductive bouquet of candied red and dark berries, kirsch, violet and minerals, plus a strong jolt of smoked meat. Spherical dark fruit flavors stain the palate, showing no rough edges and a slow-mounting floral pastille quality. Fresh, nervy and precise, with excellent finishing lift and precision. Manages to be powerful and graceful at the same time.

A candidate for perfection is the explosive, monumental 2006 Hermitage Les Bessards. Inky/purple to the rim, with a fabulous set of aromatics (lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, chocolate, and licorice), this is a full-bodied, superbly concentrated, massive yet elegant wine. Give this beauty a decade of cellaring; it should age well for 50 or more years.
