($80; includes 3% cabernet franc) Inky ruby. Expansive, intensely perfumed bouquet of dark berries, cherry pit, candied licorice and sexy oak spices. Broad, gently chewy cassis and bitter cherry flavors reach every nook and cranny of the palate, picking up an exotic violet pastille quality on the back end. Gains power on the finish, which features strong anise, tobacco and lead pencil qualities. Serious and in need of cellaring.

Drink Dates 2016-2026

A slower than usual maturation and a tremendous difference between daytime and night time temperatures allowed us to pick the grapes later than in previous years, between Apr 25 and May 19. The climatic conditions coupled with intense vineyard segmentation allowed us to follow maturation levels closely and wait patiently for the tannins to truly ripen while conserving the fresh fruit expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto.Dark cherry and plum fruit, spice, firm tannins, aromatic pepper quality. Tight and dense on the palate.  (RH)

Drink Dates 2009-2036

The 2006 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon is a glass-coating opaque purple with an alluring bouquet of toast, tobacco, cedar, leather, mocha, and blackcurrant. Sweet, voluptuous (but not in a fruit bomb kind of way), layered, and complex already, its superb balance will ensure at least a decade of evolution and it should drink well through 2036.

A dark, muscular style, with black currant, braised fig, maduro tobacco, bittersweet cocoa and loam notes that all roll together through the dense but polished finish. There's impressive power for the vintage, along with precision and balance.

Complex and polished! The nose is filled with a floral bouquet and rich, dark fruit. Blackberry, creme de cassis, and mocha graced the palate. The tannins and fruit were wonderfully balanced; however, the tannins softened as the wine breathed. The wine provided a long, silky finish reminiscent of dark chocolate. This is an exceptional, highly recommended vintage.

Beautiful dark red with purple color. The nose was dominated with tobacco and green bell. A slight turn off for me. Big and concentrated on the palate. Cassis and black currant. Extracted and layered with a whole mouth feel. Fun to enjoy on its own without food and experience something new with each drink.

This is an outstanding bottle of wine. Just a hint of leather, tobacco, and earth with a mouthful of fruit. Well balanced, easy tannins with a long finish.

still very young and tight but give this an hour or so and the wine starts delivering. Floral notes and red berries are all over the palate. The wine has more mineral characteristics than I expected but the smoothness and integrated tannis mixed with deep cherry, graphite, earthy mushrooms were splendid.

Deep purple in color with vegetal and green pepper notes on the nose. After 2+ hours of airing a seemingly busy palate of sweet dark fruit, vegetal characters, white pepper that builds over time with lots of glass evolution toward an even larger mouth feel of fruit that lacks the balance of structured tannins and/or acid. Medium finish....this one seems all over the place but very enjoyable.

Herbal and a little funky on the nose. Delicious though, with current, bitter chocolate and olive flavors. Really interesting wine. Plenty of acidity. 14.5% alcohol.

A gummy, chewy taste that offers rich plum, red and dark berry flavors. However, I found the finish sorely lacking structure and finesse. While very fruit forward, the wine didn't seem capable of sustaining a long finish and ultimately drank like more of fruit bomb. Not what I would have expected from one of the more notable Chilean producers.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
