David Autrey and Amy Wesselman produced their first wine in 1993 after developing their winemaking philosophies at other wineries in Oregon and France. Fruit is sourced from the top vineyards in the Willamette Valley and treated to an ultra-minimalist winemaking approach. This wine shows a brooding potential that I interpreted as whole cluster fermentation, but it is not. The vineyard is historically known for producing somewhat reluctant young wines and only through a 30 minute interlude with this glass at the end of the tasting was I able to refine what I was looking for and determined there was more than meets the initial palate. Built similarly to say a Patz & Hall Alder Springs Pinot Noir that shows little in its youth, but look out when they put three years on. Here is something to ponder: David Autrey gently reminded me at the tasting that the Abbey Ridge is the most expensive Pinot Noir produced by Westrey selling for a full $7.00 more than the Justice (VF 96) and Oracle (VF 97). This is new to me but I've seen this happen before. Proceed accordingly.
