2005 Clos des Papes - Chateauneuf du Pape Rhone Blend - France - Southern Rhone - Chateauneuf du Pape - Red

France - Southern Rhone - Chateauneuf du Pape

Red Rhone Blend
Producer Notes

Clos des Papes is indisputably one of the reference points for premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Avril family, who has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century, this property maintains its distinction of premier status not only because of its exceptional product, but also due to the generosity and graciousness of its owners - Paul (father), Vincent... ($80; 65% grenache, 20% mourvedre, 10% syrah and the rest "the others") Deep red. Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of red and dark berries, licorice, incense and musky underbrush. Broad, palate-staining raspberry and blackcurrant flavors are enveloped in velvety tannins, with suave anise and Asian spices adding complexity. A huge but balanced-even graceful-wine, with a finish that refuses to let go of the palate. This remarkable young Chateauneuf has the sheer sex appeal to enjoy young but also possesses superb cellaring potential. I'd hold mine.

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape has a deep ruby/purple color, identical alcohol to the 2006, and the same pH, but it is a much more tannic wine and the acids seem slightly more elevated, even though the analysis says they are not. A complex nose of resiny pine forest notes intermixed with black raspberry, sweet kirsch, licorice and lavender jumps from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-colored wine. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and tannic, this wine begs for 4-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 25+ years.

Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there's layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Should be a monster - similar to the 1990 - when it reaches its peak.

Tannic, medium body, lavender, licorice, resin dominate. May improve with age but may dry out.

Opened the night before. Not decanted. Pretty tight but showing well. Should really round out as it ages. Beautiful floral nose then closes down a bit in the glass. Iodine, blood and deep red fruit. Nice earth and spice. Def needs more time, but still very enjoyable now if a bit austere.

Delicious. Improving with age. Better than last bottle. Classic CDP tastes.

Purple/ruby with strong brightness and depth. Very dusty nose of graphite pencil, blueberry, cotton candy, raspberries, and red plum. A lot of acid on the palate, too much even to allow for the parsing out of the flavors. Might be in a dumb phase, but has potential.

Grandiose wine of the year accolades and all, this is unarguably an excellent vintage for Clos des Papes, but I think savvy fans of the estate should look to the 2004 (as I imagine it will go toe to toe w/ the ?05 in terms of quality and evolution). There is a beautiful intensity to the attack, w/ a powerful torrent of kirsch, underbrush, grilled herbs, espresso roast, licorice and wild flowers in a package of restrained exuberance. Amidst all its tension and depth, you can sense a fine, pulsating charge of minerality that pumps through the body of the wine to the finish. There really is not a weak spot to be found through the profile of this venerable producer?s effort, but oddly enough, I said the same thing about the ?04

Wine maker, Paul Avril, compares it to 1990 but says it has better acidity. Tanzer rates 94-97

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
