Domaine Château De La Tour Print 2005 barrel Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Red Note: from vines that average 95 years of age Producer note: François Labet told me that 2005 is a "great vintage in both colors and it's rare to have such equality and even rarer when that equality exists at such a high level. I would love to have this kind of quality every vintage, particularly when the yields were as good as they were. In Clos de Vougeot, I realized 30 hl/ha, which for us is positively enormous. For example, in 2003 we had 17 hl/ha and in 2004, 23 hl/ha. I waited until September 25th to begin picking in the Côte de Nuits and had sugars, depending on the parcel of between 13.5 and 14.5%. The vinification was easy and because the phenolics were so ripe, I did a cuvaison which lasted a full month. Overall, I believe that 2005 is better than 2002 because the wines are a bit better balanced. We'll see just how good they are in 15 years but I am very optimistic." Tasting note: This too is very densely fruited with the same intense floral notes but here the fruit is darker with blue and black berry aromas that continue onto the palate saturating and hugely concentrated flavors that exude power and punch yet there is real depth as well, all wrapped in a very firmly but not aggressively structured finish that leaves no doubt that this will last for 50 years or longer. I quite like this but readers should note that this is a wine expressly made for those who intend to cellar and forget it for a long while.
