Producer Notes

Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir. ... More »

The aroma of this dense, dark red blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot is reminiscent of spicy Bordeaux, with cigar box spice and tobacco, but with a big blackberry component from the Syrah. On the palate, beautifully structured tannins add weight and depth to black cherry and blackberry fruit at the peak of ripeness. Well worth the wait of holding the wine in the cellar for a few years, this is a seriously tasty Rhone/Bordeaux hybrid from a dedicated winemaker in Paso Robles.

This isn't a very memorable wine. It was a bit disapointing to be honest. The minerality totally overshadowed the berry flavours. Won't buy this again given the $40 price point.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
