($130) Good full ruby-red. Expressive nose offers cassis, minerals, violet and brown spices. Suave on entry, then supple, sweet and seamless in the middle, without any impression of weight. This boasts lovely inner-mouth energy and lift. The sweet tannins arrive late, allowing the dark fruit and floral flavors to expand in the mouth. A highly successful vintage for this wine.

Drink Dates 2007-2032

The prodigious 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate may be Spottswoode's strongest effort since their superb 2002 and 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic bouquet of violets, graphite, blueberries, and creme de cassis with hints of licorice and cedar. Stunningly pure and elegant as well as substantial and authoritatively flavored, this is a long, rich, concentrated wine with the grace of a ballerina.

Drink Dates 2010-2017

Tight and well-structured, with a firm, compact, dense mix of spicy currant, black cherry, plum and wild berry fruit that's pure and focused, revealing more subtle flavor nuances as this unfolds, along with depth and complexity.

Drink Dates 2012-2025

2005: Still so remarkably primary, with a bit of sweetness floating in there amid lots of dusty black fruit. Spice cookie and energetic mineral on the palate. Might be pushing the ripeness a touch, but the tannins are so refined and integrated that it has both near- and long-term appeal. Drink: 2012-2025.

Rich, took a while to open up but worth the wait. Balanced, stately.

Double decant, ~5hrs open. Nose minimal at first but gets better with air. Not much on palate, tannic finish but long and pleasant.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
