Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

Owners Ken and Grace Evenstad arrived in Oregon in 1989 to pursue their passion for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their winemaker Tony Rynders, who holds a Masters in Enology from UC Davis, crafts impeccably balanced wines primarily from three low-yielding estate properties: Jerusalem Hill, Evenstad and Winery Hill. Syrah is produced under their Rock Block label.

Delicate black cherry and berry nose with a complex, sophisticated palate to match, dusty violet and black raspberry with undeniable elegance to the fine-grained tannins. Parker's early assessment of this wine in barrel during May 2007 was that it was among the finest Oregon Pinots of the vintage.

What an absolute triumph for Oregon Pinot Noir. Was not hard to see why critics called it the best of the vintage. It expressed as an almost impeccable balance between the powerful big Californians and the finesse of Burgundy. Was on the more extracted side but not terribly. Strawberries and pencil shavings. Earth and forest floor. After a hour more fruit showed forth and this great pie crust note. Easily one of the best domestic Pinot noirs ever. Finish just lasts and lasts.

We had this at a tasting on 4/18/09. It had an absolutely fabulous bouquet of cherry, mocha and baking spice. The palate followed with dark cherry, raspberry, mocha and baking spice. It was meaty with prickly tannins (It would benefit from more time or a longer decant). It was an excellent pinot and very nice!

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
