White Viognier
Producer Notes

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is... More »

($90) Light gold. Explosively aromatic nose offers a complex array of citrus and spice scents, notably tangerine, blood orange and nutmeg. Sappy and concentrated, showing great depth to the sweet but energetic citrus flavors. Really expands on the palate, with riper peach and nectarine flavors building through a strikingly long, elegant finish. "We're after finesse and expression without heaviness here." explains Guigal, who points out that this was raised in 100% new oak. "You can't see it, can you?" he asked. Nope.

Guigal is the largest producer of Condrieu, and he continues to augment his production from this tiny appellation. His 2005 Condrieu La Doriane is one of the finest he has ever made. The wine is just spectacular and in 2005 went through 100% malolactic. The wine is sensationally rich with notes of crushed rocks, white peach, spring flowers, and some bee's wax and tropical oils. Totally profound, with fabulous acidity, amazing richness and length, this is a stunner that should drink well for 4-5 years, possibly longer. Experience has taught me that confidence in Condrieu to hold up with aging is a fool's game, so enjoy this wine's early appeal and its fabulous aromatics.

Concentrated, with focused almond, acacia, mango and dried pineapple flavors. Nice cut to the finish, with lingering anise notes that really open up in the glass. Great mouthfeel. 1,500 cases made.

A terrific Rhone white, with great structure and floral and honeysuckle notes. Good either as an aperitif or with food. Plenty of stuffing left, too.

This is not your mother's Viognier. Strong, powerful nose of perfume and flowers and a mineral finish that doesn't quit. Outstanding wine that is ready to drink.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
