($75) Good deep red with ruby highlights. Aromas of black fruits, licorice, bitter chocolate and mocha. Juicy, spicy and tightly wound; sappy rather than fleshy, coming across as leaner than the winery's 2003 example. Finishes a tad pinched and dry. (Vias Imports, New York, NY)

Drink Dates 2011-2021

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino presents a remarkable balance of ripe fruit, structure and freshness. Violets, dark cherries, new leather and spices are all woven together in an elegant fabric of notable class. The purity of the fruit is superb and the finish boasts tons of finesse, with silky tannins that frame the close.

a little harsh on the open but it was not decanted and did get to breathe properly. after 30 minutes it mellowed out into its classic brunello style.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
