Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

One of the most influential mavens of modern California winemaking, Helen Turley creates in Marcassin wines that are among the most sought-after in California. Though the wines are made following a traditionalist Burgundian style, they are unique, complex representations of California Pinot and Chardonnay. A dull nose of borderline over ripe fruit also has that burnt vinyl character that precedes toasty, suave and round big-bodied flavors and here the varnish element shows up on the moderately warm finish. This is equally difficult to see much in the way of positive future development and I would not cellar it.

Good red-ruby. Vibrant, highly nuanced aromas of raspberry, blueberry liqueur, smoke, flint and flowers. Round, shapely and concentrated; a step up from the Three Sisters in intensity, energy and thrust. The dark fruit flavors show an enticing sappy quality. Finishes very long, fresh and gripping, with fine tannins.

A sensational offering, the 2004 Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge was made from Dijon clones 115, 667, and 777. Its black cherry, raspberry, blueberry, spring flower, forest floor, and underbrush-scented bouquet is followed by a full-bodied Pinot with superb flavor definition and intensity. This extraordinary Pinot Noir unquestionably resembles some of the grand crus from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.

Displays spicy sweet-sour wild berry, raspberry and black cherry fruit, with a complex underbrush, herbal, mushroom edge. Full-bodied, intense and focused, ending with a long, persistent finish. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 300 cases made.

Decanted 90 minutes in advance. On the nose smoke, bramble, sweet licorice. On the palate very rich flavors of grill meat, tar and smoke with fully integrated tannins, rich velvety mouth feel and a nice 30sec finish. Great if you like bold Pinot Noir.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
