Producer Notes

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The 2004 appears to be in all facets a better wine than the 2003. It has a gorgeous color ? a dark purple with reddish highlights with thin deeply pigmented legs. An expansive, powerful nose of sweet dark fruits with hints of stone and minerals. Oak is surprisingly kept in check. Finishes rather short. Perhaps a tiny bit of residual sugar is present. Not a long term ager but will give much pleasure over the short run. The 2004 is a 60% Cabernet and 40% Merlot blend from vines that were planted in 2001. It is being aged in 100% new French oak. They have enough juice on hand to make about 1,400 cases however the actual cases produced won't be known until a final selection is made. For the 2005 vintage, the Kapcs?ndy Family has one acre of Franc coming on line. Given the big swing in the amount of Merlot used in 2004 versus 2003 plus the new Franc available in 2005 its clear that the cepage of this wine has not yet been completely settled upon by the winery and likely will continue to change in the future.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
