The most aromatically complex of these '04s with an airy yet serious nose featuring a lovely mix of red, blue and violet aromas that combine with elegant, pure and classy middle weight flavors that offer excellent length though there is just a hint of acidity showing through on the moderately toasty finish. As fans know, this wine has an admirable track record and it's possible that the present youthful awkwardness will round out in time.

($75) Red-ruby.Subdued but pure nose hints at cherry, raspberry and cured tobacco. Densely packed but distinctly tighter-grained than the East Block, with flavors of cherry, cola and earth.This intense pinot is plenty fleshy but less fruity and forthcoming today. Intriguing notes of black pepper and licorice on the long finish. This, too, remained fresh and seamless with extended aeration, but needs time in bottle to express itself.

The 2004 Pinot Noir West Block (400 cases) is one of the most profound Pinot Noirs I have ever tasted... from anywhere. Huge floral, black raspberry, forest floor, cherry liqueur, black currants, and Asian spice aromas soar from the glass of this remarkably intense offering. With a layered, multi-textured, full-bodied palate, profound length, and dazzling purity as well as equilibrium, it is a tour de force in Pinot Noir as well as an exquisite example of just how far California winemakers have progressed in taming this fickle varietal. Kudos to Tom Rochioli, one of the truly great guys of the wine business.

Effusively fruity, rich and layered, with intense, concentrated black cherry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that's firm and well-structured, finishing with a strong burst of berry flavors. Picks up a nice edge of toasty oak. 400 cases made.

Very ripe and plummy when opened, settled down and improved after an hour. Tasty but not as aromatic ally complex as the best pinot noirs.

This is great classic Pinot. Full fruit structure with supportive tannins that almost go unnoticed. The fruit in this wine is excellent.

deep reddish purple color; heady nose full of cherries and violets; Reminiscent of a French burgundy; Lots of fruit on the palate mixed with cola and licorice flavors;it finishes with undertones of loamy earth. a complex wine--in its prime now but may get even better with more bottle age.
