2004 Fontodi - Flaccianello Della Pieve Sangiovese - Italy - Tuscany - Other - Red

Italy - Tuscany - Other

Red Sangiovese
Producer Notes

Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich soil that gives the fruit a signature high-toned, red cherry profile. The wines are studies in the profound elegance and muted power of... More »

Issue Issue 133

($100; 100% sangiovese) Medium-deep red. Multifaceted nose offers red- and blackcurrant, flowers, tobacco and licorice, accented by an elegant mineral quality. This displays incredible freshness, with a delicate balsamic quality perfectly framing the red and dark fruit flavors. Finishes extremely long, with spectacularly suave tannins. Now made from the estate's best sangiovese grapes; up to the '01 vintage, this wine was the product of a single vineyard that has since been replanted.

The 2004 Flaccianello della Pieve is super elegant, polished and impeccably refined, just as it always has been. At the same time, it is one of the bigger 2004s from Tuscany readers will come across. Dark red berries, flowers, spices and menthol are layered into the finish. Today the aromatics aren't fully developed, but that should not be an issue in another few years. There is plenty of underlying structure to support many years of fine drinking. The quality of the tannins is particularly fine, especially next to the other great Flaccianellos.

(#63 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2007) Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, light toasty oak, cream and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Wonderful Sangiovese. 4,000 cases made.

Popped and poured, and then quickly decanted. Still very dark purple / red color showing little signs of aging. The nose was yielding aromas of black fruits and flowers; slight undertones of spice and chocolate. On the palate, this wine is big and still very tight, with predominate and edgy tannins. While enjoyable and showing lots of promise, I'd leave this wine in the cellar for at least another few years.

Manetti's 2004 Flaccianello della Pieve (100% Sangiovese aged in 100% new oak) is simply stunning. Fresh and vibrant, it offers compelling aromatics and endless layers of fruit that develop in the glass, with superb length on the palate and gorgeous overall balance. Although it is still holding back much today, make no mistake about it, Flaccianello is one of Italy's blue-chip wines and the 2004 is a profound vintage for this wine. In order to enjoy its full range of expression readers will have to wait at least another five years after which it will provide memorable drinking to age 25, perhaps longer. A recent bottle of the 1982 was still full of life when tasted a few months ago. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
